How Much Does SEO Cost in 2026? Honest Prices, Models and Red Flags

24. September 20268 min readby Okapi Digital

In short: How much does SEO cost in 2026? A one-off local setup usually runs between €500 and €1,500, and ongoing monthly work between €400 and €3,000. Hourly rates sit between €60 for a freelancer and €180 at a larger agency. At Okapi Digital in Frankfurt, a one-off Local SEO Start is €790 and ongoing SEO starts at €399 per month.

Ask five providers what SEO costs and you will get quotes from €99 a month to €8,000 a month. All of them call it SEO. That spread is why so many businesses postpone the decision: with no yardstick, every quote looks arbitrary. This article gives you the ranges we see in the German and wider European market, explains where they come from, and hands you the questions that separate a serious offer from a bad one.

Why Do SEO Prices Vary So Widely?

SEO is not a protected term and describes no fixed scope of work. Two proposals with the same title can contain completely different jobs.

At the cheap end you are usually buying observation: a tool produces a monthly report, someone glances at it, you receive a PDF. At the expensive end you are buying implementation: someone researches topics, writes copy, restructures pages, clears technical faults and measures what that does to your enquiries. The first costs almost nothing to produce. The second costs the working hours of people who know what they are doing.

Then there is competition. A physiotherapy practice in Bockenheim competes for local searches against perhaps a dozen other practices. A provider chasing a national term competes with companies that have been funding that topic for years. The workload differs by a multiple, and the price follows the workload.

How Much Does SEO Cost? The Ranges at a Glance

The table below shows ranges we run into regularly in proposals, tenders and conversations with businesses in Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region. They are experience values rather than survey data, and they shift by sector and region.

ServiceModelTypical price range
SEO audit / initial analysisone-off€800–3,000
Local SEO setupone-off€500–1,500
Google Business Profile optimisationone-off€250–600
Ongoing work, local businessmonthly€400–1,000
Ongoing work, mid-sized companymonthly€1,000–3,000
Ongoing work, national competitionmonthly€3,000–10,000
Freelancerhourly€60–120
Agencyhourly€100–180
Researched, optimised SEO articleper piece€150–600
In-house SEOsalary + toolsFull-time role plus €100–500 of tools per month

What stands out is how little the extremes have to do with each other. A €99 monthly package cannot mathematically contain an hour of qualified work. What it usually contains is automated reporting or entries in directories nobody reads.

One-Off, Monthly or Hourly: Which Model Fits?

Three billing models dominate, and each suits a different situation.

One-off project. You pay a fixed sum for a defined package: analysis, on-page work, Google Business Profile, local directories, a review strategy. After that the site runs with no further cost. This suits businesses with one location, manageable competition and a website that is technically sound. The catch is that search results are a comparison. If competitors keep working and you stop, you slowly lose the ground again.

Monthly retainer. You pay a fixed monthly fee for continuous work: content, technical upkeep, rank monitoring, reacting to Google updates. This is the standard model once SEO is meant to become a real sales channel. When you budget a monthly SEO cost, give an SEO retainer at least six months before you judge whether it works.

Hourly. You buy a block of hours and call them off. That fits if you already have someone in-house doing the implementation and only need direction. It fits badly if you want results without getting involved, because nobody owns the overall outcome.

Freelancer, Agency or In-House: What Does Each Route Cost?

Freelancers are the cheapest entry and are often excellent. You get one person with one specialism. If that specialism matches your problem, it is a good choice. It gets difficult when your project needs technical work, copy and design at once, or when that one person is ill, booked out or on holiday.

SEO agency pricing sits higher because several roles work together and implementation is included. The difference shows up mainly in what actually goes live. Plenty of SEO projects stall because the recommendations are still sitting in a spreadsheet a year later. So always ask who implements the changes.

In-house only adds up above a certain size. A permanent role ties up a full salary, plus tool subscriptions that run into the hundreds per month depending on scope, plus ramp-up time. In exchange the knowledge stays in the building and response times are short. For companies with few locations and a clear offer, external support is usually cheaper.

What Drives the SEO Cost Up?

Four factors explain almost every price difference.

Competition. The more providers fighting over a term, the more content, technical quality and authority it takes. "Dentist Sachsenhausen" is reachable. "Dentist" nationally is a different project.

Number of keywords and pages. Ten search terms for one location is manageable. Five cities times four services is twenty landing pages that all need writing, building and maintaining.

How much gets implemented for you. The biggest lever on price. A list of recommendations is cheap. Research, copy, implementation, technical fixes and measurement cost hours, and they are what produces the result.

The state of your website. A slow site with a broken structure has to be repaired before optimisation does anything at all. Some proposals include that groundwork and some quietly do not. What a solid foundation costs is broken down in how much does a website cost.

What Belongs in a Serious SEO Proposal?

A solid proposal answers six questions without you having to chase them:

  1. What exactly happens each month? Number of articles, scope of technical work, which pages get touched.
  2. Which keywords or topics? With search volume and an honest read on how realistic the position is.
  3. Who implements? The agency, your IT team or your webmaster. This decides whether anything happens at all.
  4. How is progress reported? Monthly, with rankings, traffic and above all enquiries. Positions on their own are not results.
  5. What term and notice period? Three months of ramp-up is fair. A twenty-four month lock-in is not.
  6. Who owns the output? Copy, logins and accounts should sit with you, not with the agency.

Which Red Flags Should Make You Walk Away?

A few promises are reliable signals to keep looking.

Guaranteed number-one rankings. Nobody controls Google's results. A guaranteed position is either a promise that cannot be kept or a term nobody searches for.

Bought backlinks as the core service. Buying links breaks Google's guidelines and can trigger a manual action. A package whose main selling point is "500 backlinks" is selling you risk.

No reporting, or reporting without numbers. If you cannot say after three months what changed, you are paying for a feeling.

Long minimum terms with no exit. Credible providers need ramp-up time and will say so. They do not need a two-year lock-in.

A flat price quoted without looking at your website. Anyone who sends a proposal without seeing the site cannot know the workload.

What Does SEO Cost at Okapi Digital?

We work with fixed packages because businesses need to be able to plan. All prices are net, plus VAT.

PackagePriceBuilt for
Local SEO Start€790 one-offSingle-location businesses that want to show up in Google Maps and local search
SEO Growthfrom €399 / monthCompanies that want predictable enquiries from Google, cancellable monthly after three months
SEO Ultrafrom €890 / monthSeveral audiences or locations, built bilingually, including visibility in AI answers

Local SEO Start covers the Google Business Profile setup, local keyword research for your area, on-page optimisation of your homepage, directories with consistent data, a review strategy and a results report after 30 days. SEO Growth builds on that with technical SEO, four optimised articles a month, schema markup for AI search and monthly reporting. SEO Ultra adds a content strategy with topic clusters, eight articles in two languages, landing pages for further cities and quarterly strategy sessions.

What we do not promise is position one. Serious optimisation typically needs three to six months before results are noticeable. The full scope is on our SEO service page. How local visibility works in practice here is covered in our local SEO Frankfurt guide.

When Does SEO Pay for Itself?

The maths is unglamorous: a channel is worth it when it brings in more than it costs. Two numbers decide it, and you know them while your provider does not.

First, what is a new customer worth to you, counted across the whole relationship rather than the first invoice alone? Second, how many enquiries turn into customers?

A trades business with an average job value of €800 and a one-in-three close rate needs roughly two extra enquiries a month for a €399 retainer to break even. A law firm with four-figure matters needs less than one. An online shop with a €30 basket needs considerably more, and for that shop the route through SEO is a longer one.

Which is why "how much does SEO cost" cannot be answered without the counter-question "what is a customer worth". Do that sum before you sign anything.

Conclusion

SEO prices vary so much because very different work is sold under one word. The range of €400 to €3,000 a month is real, and within it the result depends mainly on how much of the work actually gets implemented. A cheap retainer where nothing goes live is more expensive than a mid-range one where something ships every month.

Test every proposal against the six questions above, stay away from ranking guarantees and bought links, and work out what a customer is worth to you before you set a budget.
